General Summary:

This position reports to the Team Leader- Mathematical Modelling or their designee; is located in Banbury, UK. Responsible for the development of mathematical models, advanced algorithms, and solvers, with a firm focus on car performance. This position is an integral part of the Mathematical Modelling Team, within the Performance Systems Department.

 

General Responsibilities:

  • Promote teamwork and effective communications to develop working relationships between all personnel and departments.
  • Help to identify performance strengths and weaknesses and opportunities for improvement, to guide both car design and trackside operations.
  • Supervise and develop the capabilities of junior Mathematical Modeler(s).
  • Follow all safety regulations in all venues.
  • Adhere to all engineering and wider business processes.
  • Assumes any responsibilities and duties delegated by the Team Leader – Mathematical Modelling or their designee.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a strong understanding of rigid/flexible body kinematics/dynamics theory, standard simulation workflows, modern software development techniques, vehicle engineering processes, contributors to vehicle performance, and modern racing car design/architecture.
  • Work with Vehicle Performance and Dynamics Engineers in the development of the team’s modelling and analysis tools and techniques.
  • Provide tools that can model any vehicle dynamics characteristics of the car considered important and to facilitate the assessment of new concepts, in line with the performance objectives of the Vehicle Science Group.
  • Conduct research to assess alternative approaches to physics modelling and analysis.
  • Propose novel mathematical or computing approaches that balance competing requirements such as accuracy, stability, solve time and determinism for real-time deployments.

 

Education and Work Experience:

  • Minimum BSc in Mathematics, Computational Mechanics, or another STEM subject, but with substantial experience in applied mathematics (e.g. physics, DAEs, linear and non-linear systems/solvers, or numerical methods in optimization/optimal control). 
  • MSc/PhD preferred.
  • At least 3 years’ experience in motor racing, or in mainstream automotive, vehicle dynamics/simulation/control is desirable.
  • Prior experience in high level motor racing (Formula One, Formula E or WEC) would be beneficial.

 

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • A robust technical background in applied mathematics, physics or engineering, ideally around automotive/aeronautical/racing applications.
  • Confident programmer with substantial experience in delivering robust, reliable, and well-tested products from concept to being deployed in a production environment.
  • Experience with MathWorks Matlab/Simulink.
  • Experience with compiled and object-oriented programming languages is essential.
  • Work to a consistently high standard in stressful and time sensitive situations, whilst prioritizing and managing the workload efficiently.
  • A sympathetic approach to your work colleagues and an ability to integrate within a group environment.
  • Work well within a team environment with personnel at all levels.
  • A can-do positive approach and a willingness to help others is essential.
  • Quick decision-making skills whilst working through problems in a scientific and analytical way.

 

Equipment and Applications:

Daily usage of:

  • Matlab/Simulink
  • An object-oriented simulation code base, such as C# or C/C++
  • Visual Studio, .NET, Source Control (Git), Azure DevOps
  • Microsoft 365/OneDrive

 

Work Environment Physical Demands:

An ability to work and prioritize within a high pressure, time sensitive environment while retaining a methodical approach is essential. The role may require occasional domestic & international travel and a willingness to work long and flexible hours including weekends.

 

This position may require lifting to 50 pounds, repeated bending, squatting and manual dexterity. Fast-paced work environment requiring heavy mental demands. Work environment includes machinery, race cars, 7-post and other rigs, grinding debris, and hazardous fluids. All employees must ensure compliance with the Company Health and Safety Policy, and all relevant other statutory Health and Safety legislation.
